20. Petalburg Gym

Walkthrough

With four badges you can challenge your father. Leave Lavaridge Town by Route 112 and Route 111, go back through Mauville City, and walk west to Petalburg City through Verdanturf, Rusturf Tunnel and Rustboro.

The Petalburg Gym is a set of rooms joined by doors, with a trainer in each room. You choose your path through the doors, and you must beat at least three of the seven trainers to reach Norman's room. Norman uses Normal types, so Fighting moves work well. He gives you the Balance Badge and TM42.

Wally's father then takes you across town to Wally's house and gives you HM03. With the Balance Badge you can use Surf outside battle, which opens up the sea and the rivers. Mr. Briney's ferry stops running for good, so from now on you cross the water yourself.

Two other things change after this badge. Wattson leaves his gym and stands outside in Mauville City, waiting to talk to you. A man appears in the Dewford Hall and gives you TM36.

With the Go-Goggles, you can now explore the desert on Route 111. About half of the times you enter Route 111, the Mirage Tower stands in the desert. Climbing it needs the Mach Bike to cross cracked floors and Rock Smash. At the top you choose either the Claw Fossil or the Root Fossil, and then the tower collapses. The Devon Corporation in Rustboro brings the fossil back to life as Anorith or Lileep. The fossil you leave behind turns up later in the Desert Underpass.
