Game modes

Standard, Ironman, Group Ironman, Hardcore, Hard Mode, the randomizer and run modifiers.

Every character is made with a mode, and a few options on top of it. You choose them in the character wizard, and they are fixed for the life of the character.

The modes

ModeIn short
StandardThe ordinary game. Play with everyone.
IronmanJust you: no trades, mail or market with other players. Shops and in-game gifts still work.
Group IronmanIronman for up to 5 players, who trade and share a box with each other and nobody else.

Options

OptionAllowed withIn short
HardcoreIronman, Group IronmanOne life. A whiteout loses Hardcore for good.
Hard ModeAny modeEvery trainer battles like a Gym Leader.
RandomizerIronman, Group IronmanThe Pokémon in the world are shuffled.
Run modifiersAny modeChange rates and rules: shiny rate, exp, catch rate, level caps and more.

Fixed once created

The wizard says it plainly: the mode, Hardcore, Hard Mode, the randomizer, the modifiers and the group are locked in once the character is created. The server records them; nothing on your side can change them later. There are only three ways a character's rules ever change, and each goes one way:

  • A Group Ironman who leaves (or is removed from) their group becomes a solo Ironman.
  • A Hardcore character who whites out loses Hardcore and carries on as a plain Ironman.
  • An Ironman can ask to stop being an Ironman; seven days later the character becomes Standard.

Sanctioned and tuned runs

A run with no randomizer and no modifiers is sanctioned: it plays by the standard rules and is compared with other sanctioned runs. Hard Mode keeps a run sanctioned. The randomizer or any modifier makes a run tuned: it keeps its badges and achievements, but it is listed apart from the standard runs. Picking a modifier's default value does not count as a change.

Character cards and nametags show the mode:

TagShown as
—Standard

HCHardcore Ironman
HC-GIMHardcore Group Ironman
*Tuned run (randomizer or modifiers; Hardcore's tag wins)

A Hard Mode run adds "Hard Mode" after the name.

Not in the game yet

There are no leaderboards yet. Being sanctioned is what will make a run eligible for them.
