2. Choosing a Starter

Walkthrough

Walk north out of Littleroot Town. On Route 101, Professor Birch is being chased by a wild Zigzagoon, and his bag is lying on the path.

Open the bag and choose one of the three Poké Balls inside: Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip. The battle against the Zigzagoon starts at once, and your starter is the only Pokémon you have.

After the battle, Birch takes you back to his lab and lets you keep the Pokémon you chose. He then asks you to go and find your rival on Route 103, north of Oldale Town.

The three Johto starters that the lab lists come much later: Birch offers one only after the Hall of Fame, and only once your Hoenn Pokédex is complete.
