17. Vermilion Gym

Walkthrough

A small tree blocks the Gym door; cut it. Inside, the way to Lt. Surge is shut by a door with two switches hidden in the Gym's trash cans. Find the first switch; the second is in one of the cans next to it.

Lt. Surge uses Electric types: Voltorb, Pikachu and Raichu at level 24. Ground-type Pokémon are immune to Electric moves; Diglett from Diglett's Cave, just east of the city, is ideal.

Three Gym trainers, Dwayne, Baily and Tucker, stand before him. Beating Lt. Surge earns the Thunder Badge and TM34 (Shock Wave). The Thunder Badge also lets you use Fly outside battle once you have it.
