Shinies

Shiny odds, how the roll works, and how to spot a shiny Pokémon.

A wild Pokémon is shiny with a chance of 1 in 8192, the Emerald odds. The world server makes the roll, so it cannot be changed from your game.

As in Generation 3, being shiny is not stored on the Pokémon: it follows from the Pokémon's personality value and its original trainer's ID. A shiny Pokémon stays shiny when it is traded, boxed or evolved.

Changing the odds

The Shiny rate run modifier, chosen when the character is made, multiplies the odds by 2, 4, 8 and so on up to 256 (1 in 32).

Differs from the mainline games

The odds stay at Generation 3's 1 in 8192, not the 1 in 4096 of Generation 6 and later. There is no Shiny Charm and no Masuda method (there are no Eggs).

Spotting a shiny

  • Its sprite uses its shiny colours.
  • A sparkle plays when it is sent out and every time it switches in, as in Emerald.

Trainers' Pokémon are never shiny: they have no original trainer ID to match.
