Doubles & partner battles
Double battles, two trainers at once, the Steven multi battle, and the rules that change with two Pokémon on each side.
Kinds of double battle
| Battle | How it starts |
|---|---|
| Double battle | Some trainers fight as a pair, for example Tate & Liza. You need two Pokémon that can battle; with only one, they say so and do not battle. |
| Two trainers at once | Two trainers who each see you at the same time fight you together, one Pokémon each on the field. |
| Multi battle | Once in Emerald: at the Mossdeep Space Center, Steven fights beside you against Maxie and Tabitha. |
Your first two Pokémon in party order who can battle are sent out.
Steven's team
In the multi battle you control only your own Pokémon; Steven picks his own moves. His team is fixed:
Rules that change in a double battle
- Moves that hit both foes do ×½ damage while both foes are standing. Moves that also hit your partner (Earthquake, Magnitude, Explosion, Selfdestruct) are not reduced.
- Reflect and Light Screen reduce damage by ⅓ instead of ½ while both Pokémon on that side are standing.
- Lightning Rod and Storm Drain draw single-target Electric and Water moves to themselves, from a foe or from their partner.
- Helping Hand makes the partner's move do ×1.5 damage that turn. It fails if the partner has already moved or is switching or using an item.
- If a move's target has fainted, it goes to the other Pokémon on that side.
- Switching and items from the Bag happen first, in field order rather than by Speed.
See Damage and Priority for the details.
Differs from the mainline games
- Moves that hit both foes do ×½, as in Generation 3, not ×0.75.
- Follow Me and Rage Powder succeed but do not draw attacks yet.
- Trainers in a double battle switch Pokémon only when one faints.
