Battles between players are not in the game yet.

There are no battles between players. Every battle is against a wild Pokémon or a trainer the game controls.
The menu bar already has a PvP button with four entries: Matchmaking Signup, Tournament Signup, Tournaments and PvP Statistics. They are greyed out and say they are coming later. Singles are planned first, then doubles and team play; there is no date.
You can watch other players' battles instead: see Spectate & follow.
