Critical hits
Critical hit stages, their odds, and what a critical hit ignores.
A critical hit does ×1.5 damage. The chance depends on the attacker's critical-hit stage:
| Stage | Chance |
|---|---|
| 0 | 1 in 24 (about 4.2%) |
| +1 | 1 in 8 (12.5%) |
| +2 | 1 in 2 (50%) |
| +3 or more | Always |
Raising the stage
| Source | Stages |
|---|---|
| Focus Energy, Dire Hit, Lansat Berry | +2 |
| A high-critical move: Karate Chop, Razor Leaf, Crabhammer, Slash, Aeroblast, Cross Chop, Air Cutter, Leaf Blade, Sky Attack, Blaze Kick, Poison Tail, Cross Poison, Night Slash, Shadow Claw, Psycho Cut, Stone Edge, Attack Order, Spacial Rend, Drill Run | +1 |
| Scope Lens, Razor Claw | +1 |
| Super Luck | +1 |
| Lucky Punch (Chansey), Leek (Farfetch'd) | +2 |
Storm Throw and Frost Breath always land a critical hit.
What a critical hit ignores
- The attacker's lowered Attack or Sp. Atk, and the target's raised Defense or Sp. Def.
- Reflect and Light Screen.
Battle Armor, Shell Armor and Lucky Chant prevent critical hits.
Differs from the mainline games
These are the Generation 6 and later rules (×1.5 damage, 1 in 24 base). In Emerald and FireRed a critical hit does ×2, the base chance is 1 in 16, and the stages run 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2.
