Channels & chat

Channels 1 and 2, the chat tabs, Global and Local chat, and the limits.

Channels

The world runs on two channels, 1 and 2. Each holds both regions. The server puts you on a channel when you sign in, and if a channel gets crowded or restarts, its players are moved to the other one and told so.

Per channel: the players you see on the map, Local chat, spectating and following, and inspecting a player by name. Across both channels and regions: Global chat, whispers, your friends list and the Online list (which shows each player's channel).

Changing channel

Choose Community → Change Channel on the menu bar, or type channel in the console (or channel 2 to move straight there). The window shows how many players are on each channel: the exact number up to 10, otherwise Quiet, Busy or Full.

You cannot change channel:

  • within 30 seconds of the last change,
  • during a battle, a cutscene or a Safari Game,
  • to a channel that is full (80 players).

Chat

Press Enter or T to open chat and to send; Esc closes it. While typing, Page Up / Page Down (or LB / RB) move between tabs. On a new install the chat starts collapsed to its tab row; opening it to type expands it, and the game remembers whether you left it shown or hidden.

TabWhat it carries
GlobalThe default. Reaches every player on both channels and in both regions; lines from the other region are tagged, for example [Kanto]
LocalYour map and the maps directly connected to it, on your channel
SystemGame notices. A line typed here goes to Global
BattleBattle messages. A line typed here goes to Global
GuildEmpty: "You are not in a guild yet." Guilds are not in the game
WhisperYour whispers
  • Links. In a message, type @ and press Tab to link one of your party Pokémon, or # to link a bag item. Up to 4 links per message.
  • Timestamps. The Time button shows or hides them.
  • Each tab keeps the last 300 lines.

Limits

  • 200 characters per message.
  • One message every half second. Faster lines are dropped without a notice.
  • Formatting codes and control characters are removed.

The only slash commands in chat are the whisper ones (/w, /whisper, /r, /reply). Any other line starting with / is sent as ordinary text; console commands do not run from chat (see Console commands).

Not in the game yet

There is no chat filter, no way to mute or ignore a player's chat lines, and no guild or group chat.
